Young Researchers' Roundtable on Spoken Dialog systems

The Young Researchers' Roundtable on Spoken Dialog Systems is an annual workshop designed for students, post docs, and junior researchers working in applied spoken dialog systems research. The roundtable provides an open forum where participants can discuss their research interests, current work and future plans. The workshop is meant to foster creative thinking about current issues in spoken dialog systems research, and help create a stronger international network of young researchers working in the field. There is no actual age restriction to participating in the workshop, it is simply designed for researchers who are at a relatively early stage of their careers.

So far, the workshop attendance has been based on participant's submission of a position paper. As part of the submission process, participants also propose discussion topics. The workshop constitutes of several parallel discussion sessions in the morning and in the afternoon. Each session follows a roundtable format on a topic defined beforehand. In 2007 a panel of senior researchers was established. It was titled "Advice for a young dialogue researcher".

Upcoming Workshops

We are currently in the process of planning the 4th annual Young Researchers' Roundtable in 2008. Following the previous events, we assume that it will be co-located with Interspeech 2008 or SigDial 2008.

Previous Workshops

Three roundtables have been held. The first, in 2005, was in Lisbon, Portugal, and attracted 26 position papers. In 2006, the worksop was held in Pittsburgh, PA, USA and attracted 40 position papers. In 2007, the worksop was held in Antwerp, Beglium and attracted 26 position papers. Here you may find links to the proceedings, and to the workshop webpages of each of these:

Sponsorship and Endorsement

The Young Researchers' Roundtable grew out of the Dialogs on Dialog reading group at Carnegie Mellon University. It has received endorsements from both ISCA and SIGdial. In addition, both Microsoft Research and ISCA have been regular sponsors of the workshop. The organizing and advisory committees have been comprised of students, researchers, and faculty from institutions around the world.
