Hongkong Visa

For your study at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology you need a student visa. You should start the application process at least 2 months better 2 1/2 months before your study at HKUST.

At first ist very important for the HKUST to know the intended period (from DD/MM/YY) to (DD/MM/YY) of your stay.

In general, exchange students can choose to study at HKUST for either one (Fall or Spring) or two (Fall & Spring) semester. Regarding exchange students the Fall and Spring Semesters have been scheduled as follows:

  • The Spring semester of 2009/10 starts on 1 Feb 2010 and ends on 17 May 2010.

The tentative schedule for the academic year 2010/11 is as follows:

  • Fall semester       1 Sept 2010 - 21 Dec 2010
  • Spring semester   7 Feb 2011 - 31 May 2011

But this schedule does not apply to visiting internship students; they can come according to their own schedule.

The following documents are required for student visa application:

  1. A copy of the letter of HKUST offering you admission to HKUST.
  2. A bank letter certifying the amount of financial support you have for your study at the HUKST. HKUST recommends that students should have no less than HK$ 24,000 per semester (approximately US$ 3,000) to cover their expenses for one semester (about  six  months).  Besides, the certification letter should be written in English, or is attached with an English translation, if it is written in another language.
  3. An extra photo of you in addition to the one that you affixes to the application form.
  4. A copy of your travel document containing your personal particulars, photo, passport validity, signature and details of any re-entry visa held (if applicable only).
  5. To fill out the application form: ID (E) 936 A, ID (E) 936 E, ID (E) 936 K and ID (E) 936 L which can be downloaded from the following website: www.seng.ust.hk/exchange/files/ID(E)936.pdf
Then submit it with all the required documents above to Josie Man, ECE Department  eejosie@hkust. Josie Man will forward them to the Admissions, Registration and Records Office, that will act as his sponsor. Once they have received all the necessary documents, it may take 4 to 6 weeks to process the visa application.

Some answers regarding questions, which are often asked by students:

There are some questions, which are often asked by exchange students. Josie Man of HKUST has answered the questions and she has provided this very helpful information for you:

It is possible that exchange students can write their diploma thesis or seminar paper between June and August or it is only possible during Fall and Spring semester?

  • Exchange students can write their diploma thesis or seminar paper only during Fall and Spring Semester. They may come a few days early (in late August), but they will officially registered as exchange student only when the Fall semester begins.
  • In general, exchange students can choose to study at HKUST for either on (Fall or Spring) or two (Fall or Spring) semesters. In  2008/2009, the Fall and Spring semesters have been scheduled as follows: Fall Semester 2008/2009:  01. Sept. 2008 - 20. Dec. 2008 and Spring Semester 2008/2009: 02. Febr.  2009 - 30. May 2009.

Do exchange students (with student visa) have any facilities or advantages? For example can they have lunch or dinner at the cantine of HKUST? Do they have access to the library or internet? Can they rent a room at the Campus? Can they go to a taught course?

  • Exchange students will have access to all on-campus educational, sports and recreational facilities enjoyed by regular students of the University. They can also enjoy free out-patient services in the on-campus Medical Clinic, and primarily dental services from the on-campus Student Dental Clinic.
  • On Campus accomodation will be provided to them, but of course they need to pay a charge of it.
  • Exchange students may take courses offered by HKUST. They will attend classes, tests and examinations as required by the courses in which they have enrolled. They will be subject to the same academic regulations of HKUST, like all other regular students

What is the difference between visiting internship students and exchange students? Do internship students need a student visa? Can they write their diploma thesis or seminar paper between June and August or only between Fall and Spring Semester? Can they use any facilities at HKUST?

  • Internship students can study at HKUST for 1-6 months. Further extension of study period may be allowed by HKUST. They can start their internship at ANYTIME during the academic year.
  • Internship students can't take any taught course at HKUST. They are supposed to do research here only (whereas exchange students can enroll into courses.
  • Internship students need to pay a tuition fee, which is about HK$ 1.800 per semester (whereas exchange students do not have to pay any tuition fee).
  • They will not be provided with on-campus accomodations (but in this case, I guess that they may seek assistance from Prof. Pascale Fung to look for off-campus accomodation).

Also, they need to obtain student visa before study here, just like the exchange student.

This information should answer all your questions.
